LEONARDO REGANO
ART CURATOR, CRITIC & ART HISTORIAN
LEONARDO REGANO
Art historian, critic, and curator specializing in 20th-century Italian art. My curatorial research focuses on emerging artistic practices, participatory processes, and experimental approaches that redefine the relationship between art and society.
I have curated exhibitions for public institutions, private organizations, and galleries in Italy and abroad. I was among the coordinators of Zero... Weak Fist by Patrick Tuttofuoco, winner of the first Italian Council grant in 2018, and I curated Mare Magnum Nostrum by Gea Casolaro (8th Italian Council grant, 2020) and Being There_Oltre il Giardino by Claudia Losi (9th Italian Council grant, 2020). The Regional Directorate of Museums of the Marche promoted the latter in collaboration with the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art in Singapore, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia. In 2018, I coordinated the Bologna residency of Helen Cammock (Turner Prize 2019), winner of the 7th edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.
Currently, I am curating Under the Same Sky by Eva Marisaldi (PAC 2023) for the National Etruscan Museum of Marzabotto, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
Since 2014, I have been responsible for exhibition projects at LabOratorio degli Angeli in Bologna, where I explore the intersection of contemporary art and conservation. I have curated solo exhibitions featuring artists such as Aldo Mondino, Piero Manai, Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Sissi, Letizia Cariello, Anne & Patrick Poirier, Eva Marisaldi, and Luca Vitone.
In addition to my curatorial practice, I serve as Curator of 'Pittura ORA' the Painting and Drawing Section at Art Verona, one of Italy’s leading contemporary art fairs. In this role, I develop projects highlighting established and emerging voices in contemporary painting and drawing, fostering dialogue between artists, collectors, and institutions.
I regularly contribute to various art magazines, particularly Exibart and Espoarte.
Alongside my curatorial work, I hold academic positions at several institutions. Recently, I have taught Phenomenology of Contemporary Arts (Fenomenologia delle Arti Contemporanee) and Expressive Issues in Contemporary Art (Problemi Espressivi del Contemporaneo) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona, as well as History and Methodology of Art Criticism (Storia e Metodologia della Critica d'Arte) at the Academy of Fine Arts Santa Giulia in Brescia.
